Speaking through adversity
Have you ever tried talking without your tongue? Good luck with that.. Your tongue is extremely vital to your speech. Abnormalities of the tongue such as a shortened lingual frenulum (this is when the tongue is connected to the floor of the mouth). known as ankyloglossia ("tongue-tied") can hinder your speech.
However, people have been known to have their tongue split (this is called bifurcation) and not experience speech problems.
You will not see the American Dental Association supporting this practice anytime soon. Although tongue splitting does not noticably hinder speech, it can cause dangerous infections.
